Summer Decorating | Scottsdale Moms Blog

May 18th, 2012

Now that the heat is upon us, it’s time to bring summer indoors. We break out the toys that have been stored away while the weather was too pretty not to be playing outside. The fort sheets go up and we sneak out to the shaded patio under the fan only to enjoy a popsicle. All the while dreaming of our annual trip to the ocean, which never comes soon enough.

And because the beach can’t get here faster, we bring the beach to us! I love candles and embellishing them with seashells is not only easy, it’s pretty and gives any space that fun, summery feel.

Here’s what you need:

~Candles, the simpler the better. I splurged on some from Pottery Barn. They are very gently scented and burn well.  JoAnn Fabrics has great pillars in tons of sizes.

~Sea shells. The flatter version work the best, but other shapes work too. I found tons on the cheap at T.J.Maxx.

~Twine. I used a soft string that has a fiber look to it. Michael’s floral section has lots of options.

~Tray. Or a plate. Or something else flat. It’s not totally necessary, but it completes the look.

How to:

1. Get creative. Arrange your candles by height either symmetrically or asymmetrically. Go with what you think look interesting.

2. Start tying. Wrap the candles a few times with the twine, just for interest. Slide the shells in the twine, or tie the shells. Whatever is easiest based on how many hands you have!

3. Complete the look. I’m not brave enough to scatter sand or smooth rocks within reach of my two year old. But! If you’re brave or if this is out of reach, spread a little around. Or use the extra shells – big or small. The less structured the better!

4. Light it up. The first time a pillar candle is burned, it will continue on the same path until it’s out of wax. That said, make the first time you burn your candle the longest so it burns close to the edges. That way you will get the most use out of your candles and they will glow beautifully!

How do you decorate for summer? What is your favorite summer decor?

Tips on How to Enhance Your Table Having A Straightforward Digital Alarm Clock

What is actually a Digital Clock you may likely ask? Well, merely put, its a  digital alarm clock that uses flashing Led’s to let you know the time. Not only is it a stylish thought, but in addition, it brings lots of essence to any lodging, workplace, or table you set it in. In addition, it comes in a few hues for even more overall flexibility!

Be sure if you happen to decide to buy the LED Tix Clock to go by means of one of my links in this article.

The Digital Clock is an example of those trendy gadgets that I’ve truly been wanting to get my hands on for many years, but I just for no reason got close to to in fact purchasing one for myself.

As far as first opinions go, I had been seriously a minor touch annoyed, I thought it felt excessively light weight and thin for any device with this selling price tag. I figured it would possess a few more options on the back for several modes, and I was not  pleased with the simple fact that you simply must manually totally reset the time every time you unplug the Digital Clock.

Following a little use however, I came to like my Digital Clock a lot greater than at first peek. The weight issue just isn’t a big situation, primarily seeing that it always is parked on my desk and I under no circumstances pick it up. In terms of the options on the back, well, being sincere I really didn’t even screw with all the possibilities they gave me, so I guess it truly is not a tremendous deal either. And last, but not least, the self maintaining time, clearly this does bug me, mainly because, for real, its 2010, after you choose a Digital Clock for this total price, it needs to do more than just keep time, which the Digital Clock does, and it should really also retain track of the time even when it is unplugged from the wall.

Generally, there just isn’t a good deal to express concerning the Digital Clock, it truly is merely a neat bit of contraption to simply turn heads. I’ll say nevertheless, that the price level tag is a bit much pertaining to what the Digital Clock gives. I really think that ThinkGeek preferably should upgrade the Digital Clock and put in unique other features and release a second-gen model, or some thing to that extent.

I believe that that’s just about all I have to express within the tix clock review. If you are searching to order one for your self, I’d say go for it if you have some additional money to invest, but if not, I might not be storing up you’re revenue for one, I just tend not to believe that it truly is that marvelous of a item to do so.

This week… | The Knole Conservation Team Blog

May 12th, 2012

..wasn’t as exciting as last week, but we still had lots of work to do.  We were grateful not to have to do any press interviews this week!

As Monday was Bank Holiday and we were open, all the show rooms had to have their deep clean completed on the one closed day this week (Tuesday).  We managed to fit in some much-needed floor waxing too, in the Leicester Gallery, Venetian Ambassadors Bedroom, Billiard Room and Museum Room.  The wet weather has led to much more time spent on the care of floor than dusting objects.

Melinda vacuuming the Reynolds Room eyemat

When vacuuming the floor on Friday we discovered some new scratches to some of the floor boards.  We couldn’t figure out what ad caused them, particularly as one seems to have been created by a sharp object!

New scratches on the Ballroom floor

Sarah inspected the furniture in the Spangled Dressing Room this week, which at the moment has been turned in to a temporary store during the building work.  We’ll be carrying out weekly checks in here as the environment in this room could change as the room is sealed off (for dust protection) when normally there is much more air movement as there are no doors between neighbouring rooms and the windows are very drafty.  The potential micro climate in the space could encourage mould growth and pest insect activity.  In fact during the inspection Sarah did find a live ‘woolly bear’ no top of the dust sheet of one of the stools.  However there were no signs of any recent pest insect damage, or mould growth.

Adult Varied Carpet Beetle on the left, and its larva the ‘woolly bear’ on the right. The larvae causes damage by eating natural textiles.

Woolly bear now in our pest pot so we can show our visitors.

On Wednesday Sally Bowling visited from Rupert Harris Conservation* to look at the lantern on the Great Stairs.

The lantern is currently displayed with real candles in the holders, but lit with a modern lightbulb

We would like to dispose of the modern central lightbulb and put electric candles in the candle holders instead.  Sally explained how the lantern could be adjusted and the different options we had for lightbulbs and candle look finishes.

Sally checking the height of one of the potential new candle fittings

More, vacuuming, dusting and floor waxing next week!

Nike Air Max 2011 How to Make Pillar Candles – My blog

May 3rd, 2012

lar candles add a stylish touch of elegance to your home and even to your dinner table as part of a centerpiece. I have seen then used before on the tables at wedding receptions in the colors of the wedding. It was very appealing. Pillar candles come in all colors and scents. They are called pillars because they are round and tall like a pillar. There is no standard size though, as pillar candles come in many widths and heights. Occasionally,Jordan 4, pillar candles are found with a unique design such as a ridge on the top and bottom.

Making pillar candles is quite simple. This type of candle is one of the most common for candle makers to indulge in. To make pillar candles, you will need molds. You can find them in all sizes at most craft stores. You can also get them online. Many online auction sites including Ebay and Yahoo offer several pillar candle molds for one great price. These molds can be found make of silicon, aluminum, or plastic. For best results,Nike Air Max 2011, choose pillar candle molds that are made of aluminum. They allow the wax to cooler better,Jordan Retro 14, resulting in a smooth finish on the candles. They are also very durable.

To get started,Jordans 12, decide on the size of candles you want to make and how many. There are charts in candle making books and on the internet that can help you determine how many pounds of candle wax you will need to complete your project. You will also need dye to color the candles and fragrances if you wish to add that to your candles.

You will need quality wick to make pillar candles. The wider the candle you will be making, the wider wick you want. To make this easier,Jordan 4 Retro, simply purchase a standard type of wick. You can braid three pieces together to make a thicker wick for wider candles. Many of the pillar candle molds have a wick holder built. In simply slide a wick the diameter of the whole into it and eliminate the guess work. Make sure you dip the wick into the melted wax before attaching it to the candle mold. Keeping the wick in place can be tricky. A good trip is to cut the wick several inches longer than you need. Then tie it to a pencil or skewer sitting across the top of the candle mold. This will ensure the wick is centered as the candle begins the cooling process.

Once your candle wax is at the proper temperature, add in anything you want to be including in your candle including dye, scents,Jordan 4 Retro, and additives. Immediately after, pour the hot wax into the pillar candle molds. Do not pour wax all the way to the top of the mold. You want to leave about four or five inches unfilled.

While for most candles you make,Jordan 4 2012, leave the candles to cool. Pillar candles need some further assistance during the cooling process. Once the top of the wax has started to become solid, you will need to add small relief holes to help with shrinkage. If you don’t create the relief holes your candles will get air pockets that keep them from hardening properly.

Once the candles have completely cooled,Air Max 2012, pour melted wax into the holes you created on the candle. Make sure the wax is about fifteen degrees hotter than what you had the wax at the first time you poured it. Allow the candle to completely cool down again. Your candles should slide out of the molds easily. If they don’t put them in the refrigerator for half an hour. Your candles should be smooth and beautiful. Make sure to trim the wick and you are ready to burn your pillar candles.

Pillar candles are beautiful. The simple design fits well with the décor in any room of your home. These candles make excellent gifts and center pieces. Pillar candles are easy to make and the supplies are inexpensive. This makes pillar candle making an excellent project,Jordan 12 Playoffs, hobby, or money making project. Pillar candles burn for hours, ensuring you will get hours of enjoyment from your endeavors.

Dawning the Light | Definitely Filipino™ Blog

April 30th, 2012

“In this age of Darkness there are two ways of spreading light, you can either be a candle, or a mirror who will reflect its light.”

This is what our liberator, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino wrote in a letter when he was isolated in a penetration camp, heavily guarded for the dictator to be sure that his advocacy of liberation will end. Writing the letter inside a high security prison and slipping it inside a flask for it to reach his countrymen takes a great nerve to do so. Yet Ninoy risked another thread of his chance of living and his family’s safety just to send the letter the hopeless Filipinos who were uncertain

whether they will have democracy again or die under the regime of martial law. Ninoy, a candle whose light was trapped behind the iron bars strived to light the wick of his countrymen for him to uplift them, to strengthen them, and to remind them; that in the age of darkness, where cruelty and hopelessness cover every sphere, a little light could do much. And every Filipino who longs for change can either be a candle to be that light or a mirror that will reflect its light.

That message, had spoken through the hearts of the Filipino people. It fired up the courage to unite, to stand up and to make a change. Some chose to be the candle, some chose to be the mirror. Nevertheless, Ninoy’s candle had lightened the wick of many Filipinos and together, they courageously faced the tanks and M16s of the Marcos Government to claim the long-lost freedom that they longed for. And they prevailed. Light had dawned.

However, the light was not enough to brighten every sphere of this country. It wasn’t enough to oust darkness. And so here we are, twenty five years after EDSA 1, the liberation for the regime of darkness, still, living in the gloomy shadow of corruption, injustice, immorality, poverty and cruelty.  Few candles of hope and integrity are burning but as time passes, these candles will die one by one until one day, this country, again, will be in total darkness.

Imagine a place of a total darkness. When the only thing that you can do is to grasp uncertainty and stumble. Not knowing where to go or what’s ahead and the only thing that you can do is to try to move forward without a vision of what’s a head.

That’s our country in darkness. Ninoy may had meant darkness as the Marcos Dictatorial Regime but this darkness may also means injustice, cruelty and such. He may had addressed it to the Filipinos in 80’s who bravely fought for the freedom through revolution but the spirit of his message had been living through generations, and twenty-five years after he had written the encouragement for the EDSA 1 revolutionaries, his message is now addressed to us. Filipino Youth, in this age of darkness, you can either be candle or a mirror.

We are living in a world where evil permeates every sphere. Where justice is not fairly served and where everything is just controlled by those who possess wealth. Where those who govern were driven with excess craving for power that they are willing to step on someone’s right just to stay on the wheel. Where those who are on the higher level of society prosper while those are less privilege remains poor and worse. Crimes are very rampant, that sanctity of human life is devalued. Every day we are facing murder news, rape headlines, salvage, robbery and such. These things comprise the gloom that blinds us today. Not the injustice and the effects of Martial Law but the selfishness of the hearts of individuals whose only goal is to satisfy their own interest.

The deceitful heart; This is the darkness that blinds us to move forward, that causes us to stumble and giving us difficulty to start again. And as long as there is no light to brighten the path, we can never move forward. Our country needs light.

A candle is a basic source of light. A person only needs to burn the wick and the candle will give its light. In my compression and analogy, Ninoy used the term “candle” instead of “lamp” or “flashlight” or anything because a candle will best define a person who will choose to stand up for a change. A lamp depends on kerosene, a flashlight depends on battery but a candle depends on nothing but on its wick, on its very own self. And order to give life, a candle needs to burns the wick and the wax off. A person who will choose to be the catalyst of change is a candle, that in order to give light, he must sacrifice his very self, his time, his effort, his very own self and even up to the point of his personal safety and easiness, even his very own life. By giving light, he can dawn hope, he can start the change.

And anyone can be a candle, anyone can be the light, anyone can advocate change. Every individual was created with his own will, intellect and emotions. And every individual, powered by the love for his country, with his knowledge ideals that our country can do far better things than just being a third world country, has the will to choose to light his wick or not. You don’t have to be a summa cum laude or a bar topnotcher, a politician or a multi-millionaire to advocate change. In your very simple way of living a life of integrity and excellence in everything you do makes a big deal to the person around you.  With that very simple way of living, you can start the light and pass it on. A candle is a person who will choose to give his self for the vision of integrity. Who will choose to start the flame and pursue to give light until the last length of the wick burns and melt his whole body down. A person who will commit that as long as his wick can give light; he would, and ultimately use the flame to light other candles.

Our country needs candles to be the source of light. The choice is in our very own self. Will you?

Mirror; a reflector of light. The candle may be the source of light but it cannot envelop the entire darkness. The light needs to cover every orb and reflectors are needed to radiate the light from the candles. Ninoy also once said that “the Filipinos are inherently good followers”. Therefore, Filipinos are good reflectors of light.

With the light from the candles of love, integrity and justice, reflected by purged, polished mirrors, I believe, that the shadow of neither darkness nor the gloom could fill a space in the sky.

I believe that no one ever wanted to see our country in this way; in the helpless manner. Nobody wants to see a frail kid in rags begging in on the street. Nobody wants injustice, corruption, cruelty and evil. Nobody wants to wants to walk in darkness, risking and facing injuries, stumbling and going back again in the same cycle of helplessness.

I believe everyone wants a peaceful life in light. Where we know we are going, we can see what’s ahead and the vision of a first world Philippines will no longer be a mere dream but a realistic vision that our country would attain.

And the youth has all the capabilities to make these things happen. We only have to choose to start this advocacy of change; of better Philippines; either to be a candle or a mirror.

“In this age of Darkness there are two ways of spreading light, you can either be a candle, or a mirror who will reflect its light.”

Ninoy wrote this for EDSA Uno. Yet, twenty years after, this message still lives. Because there will be no darkness if there is light. A candle may die but before it does, it needs to pass the fire to another candle who will continue spreading the light.

As a quote states; “Darkness is the absence of light”. Therefore, if every Filipino will choose to either be a candle or a mirror, there will be no darkness to bind us.
